ESRI ArcGis migration to Microsoft Azure and spatial data infrastructure modernization

Cloud Transformation & Strategic Advisory: Functioned as a Strategic Advisor and a Co-Architect for a major German energy supplier's long-term Geoplatform cloud migration. Project Goal: Migrate a specialized GIS solution (ESRI ArcGIS stack) to Microsoft Azure for increased flexibility, faster feature delivery, and long-term sustainability. I personally influenced the product direction by authoring and implementing DevOps (Terraform, Pipelines) for automated cloud provisioning and demonstrating feasibility through a successful Proof of Concept.

Enterprise GIS Integration & Data Governance: Drove a critical modernization initiative by developing an architecture to harmonize all inbound and outbound enterprise data interfaces through a centralized, governed layer hosted on SAFE FME Server. This framework enables monitoring, quality control and measurement for interfaces. Advised the customer to replace outdated SAP PM import/export procedures with a modern OData service connected to the new Geoplatform Azure API Management instance, establishing a robust, real-time foundation for enterprise data exchange.

Operational Excellence & Governance: Established the foundation for SLA-driven operational governance by designing and implementing the solution's monitoring infrastructure. This included developing a custom log and metric ingestion pipeline feeding into Azure Monitor, and delivering a Azure Monitoring Workbook for unified health tracking and visualization across the entire solution.

Architectural Governance & Executive Partnership: Supported the project transition to the ongoing migration phase, re-architecting the overall interfacing landscape and establishing Azure Governance frameworks. Partnered closely with the internal Lead Architect to co-design and implement the technical vision, while providing executive advisory to customer management, successfully translating complex technical content into actionable work packages and business value.

B2B Commerce program on SAP technology

B2B Commerce Program Phase 1 (2019): Foundational SAP Commerce Architecture & Implementation

• Foundational Enterprise Architecture: Served as the System Architect and Principal Consultant for the multinational SAP Commerce Cloud v2 implementation. Successfully matched complex commerce and enterprise asset management requirements to a hybrid solution, combining SAP standard components with custom-built modules to support the enterprise strategy.

• Complex 3rd Party Integration: Designed and governed the integration architecture for critical 3rd party systems, including SAP ERP, Salesforce, and various custom applications. This established the foundational e-commerce platform that has driven the customer's digital strategy and subsequent program expansion.

B2B Commerce Program Phase 2 (2022 - present): Operational Maturity and B2B Strategic Expansion

• Operational Excellence & Cost Reduction: Following the high-stakes go-live and transition to operations, established the Application Lifecycle Maintenance (ALM) team for long-term service delivery. Directed the shift to operational maturity, resulting in a significant proportional reduction in ongoing operations costs (including project management overhead) compared to initial post-go-live efforts.

• Enterprise Restructuring & SAP ERP Split: Successfully led the architectural changes required to support a mission-critical Sales Organization split initiated by the backing SAP ERP system. Re-architected the commerce platform to support multiple SAP backends and their respective vendor configurations, ensuring uninterrupted B2B sales continuity during the core enterprise structural change.

• Strategic Spare Parts Integration (2023): Led the initiative to strengthen the shop's organizational position by integrating the existing Spare Parts business into the solution. Architected a highly sustainable solution enabling the rapid development of an additional storefront on the same codebase, achieving low code duplication via 'plug & play' customization classes.

• Complex System Configuration Integration (2024): Directed the enterprise-wide integration of complex system-configuration functionality into the commerce layer. Designed the interface architecture for existing compuer-system-configurator and ensured seamless, sustainable Product Information Management (PIM) by introducting product variants (bare bones, pre-configured, build-to-order etc.) and information-inheritance.

• New Revenue Stream & Cloud Brokerage (2025): Guided the implementation and architecture for reselling cloud-vendor products within the existing portfolio. Designed the end-to-end process, from product representation and checkout to DevOps automation for component provisioning, and architected the automated monthly consumption-based billing cycle via order modification records, successfully enabling a new recurring revenue stream.

SAP S/4HANA to Google Cloud Migration PoC

• Executive Advisory & Multi-Cloud Strategy: Served as the Lead Cloud Architect and Strategic Advisor for a critical Proof of Concept (PoC) to validate the business and technical feasibility of migrating on-premises SAP S/4HANA to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), adding key multi-cloud capability to the practice portfolio.

• Financial & Vendor Leadership: Drove the PoC's financial success by providing advisory support to the customer's application for Google funding. This included close collaboration with Google engineers, resolving complex contractual and licensing issues, and authoring the future enterprise architecture blueprint required for the application.

• Digital Transformation Roadmap: Developed the comprehensive Digital Transformation Strategy for the customer. This roadmap defined improved business processes, a clear migration path for components nearing end-of-maintenance, and ensured the future cloud environment was fully sized and prepared to meet upcoming requirements.

• Technical Governance & Automation: Directed all cloud-related infrastructure topics for the PoC, including networking, sizing, and cloud management, with a focus on infrastructure automation to ensure the design was scalable and operationally efficient for the subsequent full migration phase.

Strategic investor programm implementation in SAP Commerce and SAP CRM

Led the architectural and strategic analysis for a high-profile sovereign entity in Saudi Arabia to address poor automation and inefficiency within core systems. Designed a strategic Investor Experience Platform to refactor and optimize SAP Commerce and SAP CRM instances while integrating essential components for content creation and KPI reporting. The final platform blueprint featured redesigned business processes and introduced an event-based system integration built on SAP BTP Event Mesh, intending to fully support and automate the entire investor lifecycle from initial contact through "after-sales".

B2C Retail Digital Platform

This long-term engagement showcases leadership across cloud strategy, microservices architecture, and enterprise data accessibility for a major European pet food retailer.

• Executive Vision & Cloud Strategy: Acted as the Lead Cloud and System Architect responsible for the strategic vision and realization of the Fressnapf "Digital Platform." The core objective was to establish a unified data access layer and leverage SAP BTP as the primary cloud environment for customer-facing microservices, fundamentally modernizing the retailer's digital backbone. Designed and implemented a sustainable microservices development template to ensure efficient local sandboxing and frictionless transitions across the development lifecycle.

• Enterprise Microservices Architecture & API Governance: Drove the invention, design, and implementation of core, governed microservices (e.g., OrderService, PetService, NewsletterService) to address the critical challenge of accessing enterprise data scattered across disparate SAP ERP and SAP BW systems. Established clear, accessible endpoints for all crucial data and standardized consumption by implementing Microsoft Azure API Management (APIM). Architected and rolled out the self-service platform, defining user delegation policies and enforcing OpenAPI 3 specifications across all platform microservices, significantly accelerating enterprise consumption and standardization.

• Customer Identity Migration PoC: Served as the Solution Architect to design and execute a critical Proof of Concept (PoC) for a secure, seamless Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) migration. The PoC established a viable migration path to shift legacy customer master data from SAP Hybris to Azure AD using a blend of microservices and Azure AD policies, securing the customer's future identity management strategy.

• Knowledge Management & Custom Search Architecture: Solved the critical business issue of in-store employees being unable to locate high-quality content. Developed and implemented a custom Enterprise Knowledge System in six months, based on ETL tools, microservices, and Apache SOLR. This system consumes, pre-processes, and persists knowledge from disparate sources and continuously incorporates enhancements like internationalization and self-learning algorithms to improve content discovery and internal efficiency.

• Mission-Critical System Migration: Led the architecture and realization of multiple sub-projects essential to the platform's stability and function, including the migration of the Payback customer loyalty system to a new BTP microservice and the transition of the core Pricing system to an SAP BTP solution.

• SAP Customer Master Data Governance: Led the deep architectural dive and implementation of SAP Customer Data Cloud (CDC) as the central authority for customer master data. The goal was to consolidate and govern all customer identity data, establishing a unified source of truth for the entire enterprise.

Engineered the solution to emit data changes in near real-time across the enterprise by configuring and utilizing event hooks within the SAP CDC application, ensuring immediate data consistency for mission-critical ERP processes.

• Architectural Troubleshooting & Customization Strategy: Overcame the significant complexity caused by the ERP system's highly customized logic, delivering a robust and efficient customization architecture to ensure high maintainability and a painless SAP Hybris upgrade path.

Further ensured that the architecture complied with stringent security requirements, including the application of cleartext firewall rules.
